Little Britain star David Walliams has admitted the hit BBC comedy show was "hyped".
Comedians Matt Lucas and David, who signed a reported £6 million three-year deal with the BBC, are currently writing a US version of the series.
But he said he thought the pair would no longer be as popular in the UK as they have been.
Hes told the Radio Times magazine: "We'd have been happy to be less successful.
"We were hyped, and that means you have an in-built shelf life.
David added: "It's pleasing to be part of the zeitgeist, but worrying because we were overexposed. People see so much of you they want to laugh at something else.
"That's how it should be. You don't need to sustain success at the same level. Even Morecambe and Wise peaked."
The show, which was snapped up by BBC1, has won Bafta TV Awards and British Comedy Awards.
But the three-year deal with the BBC has been controversial because a new show from the duo is yet to be seen.
