Will Is Box Office Legend

Will Smith's sci-fi thriller I Am Legend crushed the competition with a record opening at the US box office this weekend.

The film took $76.5 million in its first few days.

I Am Legend now ranks as the best December opening of all time, beating the $72.6 million start for Lord of the Rings: Return of the King in 2003.

Also making an impact on the box office was Alvin and the Chipmunks – the mix of animation and live action based ion the classic TV cartoon series.

It opened in second place took $45 million of its first few days – twice what was expected of it.

Alvin… opens here next Friday while I Am Legend’s UK opening weekend has been brought forward from next Spring to December 26.
